The steeplechase racing tour came to St. James Farm in Warrenville for its 10th annual one-day stand Saturday, and Saluter was a powerful winner in the main event.
Ridden by trainer Jack Fisher, Saluter prevailed by five lengths in the $25,000 St. James Hunt Cup. Clearing 17 timber fences en route, he went the 3-mile distance in 5 minutes 56 4/5 seconds.
Oficio was the runner-up in the six-horse race.
In the $20,000 Sport of Kings Maiden Hurdle, the top steeplechase trainer in North America, Jonathan Sheppard, sent out Rippleton Road and jockey Blythe Miller for a 3-length victory. Khyble Art was second in the field of 12.
Proceeds from the seven-race program benefit Wheaton’s Marianjoy Rehabilitation Hospital and Clinics.
