Magic Hour
No Excess Is Absurd (Twisted Village) (STAR)(STAR)(STAR)
Magic Hour brings together former members of Galaxie 500 and Crystallized Movements, and like those bands the new combo blends dreamy introspection with churning aggression. The long, meandering arrangements just beg to be labeled “psychedelic,” and while there are no real songs, there are some pretty moments. Like My Bloody Valentine, the band envelops shy vocals in feedback, and on the 9-minute “Sally Free and Easy” it evokes the narcotic folk of Sandy Denny-Richard Thompson era Fairport Convention. The mushroom cloud of guitars ignited on “Heads Down (No.) 2” hints that this band is capable of transcending the preciousness of its predecessors.
