The Cubs added a right-handed pitching prospect to their 40-man roster for $50,000, selecting Tanyon Sturtze from the Oakland A’s organization with the second pick of the annual Major League Rule 5 draft Monday.
Sturtze, a 23rd-round pick of the A’s in the 1990 draft, has a 34-41 career record in five minor-league seasons.
The 24-year-old was a combined 10-8 with a 3.53 earned-run average in 26 starts and two relief appearances for Double-A Hunstville and Triple-A Tacoma last season.
The annual Rule 5 draft is divided into major-league and minor-league sections. Players left unprotected by their organizations can be chosen for $50,000 in the major-league section of the draft and $12,000 in the minor-league section.
The Cubs also announced that Ryne Sandberg will return to Chicago next month for the team’s annual convention.
Sandberg, who retired in June, will join several other former Cubs standouts-including Hall of Famers Ernie Banks, Billy Williams and new pitching coach Fergie Jenkins-Jan. 20-22 at the Chicago Hilton and Towers.
