A campaign has succeeded to ease overcrowding and racially balance Evanston’s middle and elementary schools by asking for voluntary transfers, according to Evanston/Skokie District 65 administration sources.

Intense marketing to draw both African-American and white pupils to a new, highly structured magnet school, Timber Ridge, and to the existing Martin Luther King Jr. Experimental Lab School, brought nearly 1,300 applications into district offices, officials said.
