Getting a head start on New Year’s resolutions, the Village Board has set a series of goals for 1996. Here they are:

– Complete $5 million in street rebuilding and repairs and start a street beautification program. The street rebuilding is the second phase of a three-year $15 million program.

– Implement youth programs in cooperation with the Hoffman Estates Park District and Schaumburg Township.

– Examine crime fighting strategies, particularly within the Problem Oriented Policing program, to achieve the best security for residents and businesses.

– Continue efforts to attract a world-class hotel and other businesses.

– Continue efforts to convert the defunct Elgin, Joliet & Eastern Railway freight line into a passenger line and get the long-awaited Triangle project under way.

– Foster community awareness of local government through better communication.

– Increase promotion of the Village Green outdoor amphitheater, start a community service recognition program and consider forming a sports or entertainment authority.

Mayor Michael O’Malley said the authority would deal with issues concerning new venues should a replacement be found for the shuttered Poplar Creek Music Theater. The Chicago Bears also hold an option to buy land along the tollway for a new stadium.
