These encounters can strike fear in the hearts of even the most intrepid dating veterans. Palms sweat. Stomachs churn.

Will this blind date turn out to be truly awful or merely annoying?

Now you can be reassured that you’re not alone out there on the front lines of feeble fixups.

“Everyone has a great story to tell about a blind date,” says Mike Mitchell, marketing manager for DeKuyper Cordials and Liqueurs, sponsor of a contest honoring the most dreadful blind date.

“We want to hear about the worst experience people have had, and we want to reward them for surviving.”

“You lived through the night of terror,” adds Jenna Esposito, an assistant account executive with the firm collecting entries. “Why not get to laugh about it later and even win something?”

To participate, describe your worst blind date in 250 words or less.

Entries will be judged on their originality and humor by the hosts of MTV’s “Singled Out,”Jenny McCarthy and Chris Hardwick.

The grand prize winner will receive a trip for two to Los Angeles to watch a taping of the program.

Ten winners will receive $250.

Entries must be postmarked by Oct. 1, and forms may be obtained by writing Knoll Communications, 935 W. Chestnut St., Suite 415, Chicago, Ill. 60622.
