Peter Forsberg reconfirmed his superstar status Monday night, scoring twice and adding an assist as Sweden overcame a sluggish first period to rout Germany 6-1 in the first game of the World Cup of Hockey.
Washington Capitals goalie Olaf Kolzig kept the Germans in the game until the second period, when the Swedes, playing before a near-capacity crowd of 13,521 at Globe Arena, broke it open with three power-play goals.
“It was us against their goalie,” said Swedish coach Kent Forsberg, the father of the Colorado Avalanche forward. “He was fantastic during the first part of the game.”
Also, Vancouver Canucks star Pavel Bure, a Russian, will not play in the tournament because of a kidney contusion sustained last week in an exhibition game against the U.S.
