Same old story: The Marlins were 10th in National League attendance last year and drew only 25,142 for their second game of the season. The $89 million spent on free agents during the off-season won’t be recouped with those kinds of crowds, but everything’s hunky-dory for now.
“Everybody’s happy,” Alex Fernandez told local reporters. “The players are happy. We all like playing with each other. You (media) guys are happy. You’re not ripping us yet. But I’m sure you guys will find time to do it.”
Super Bowl fever: In an article that appeared Wednesday headlined “Undefeated Marlins going all the way to Super Bowl,” Miami Herald humor columnist Dave Barry suggested Marlins owner Wayne Huizenga also buy the Cubs “so the Marlins can play them every day.” Barry also advocated electronic trap doors on the field connected to buttons on seats so fans could make disappear any dawdling players or managers who visit the mound a lot. “That,” Barry wrote, “would speed up the game.”
