An audit of the Illinois State Police released on Thursday shows that department officials had about $3.4 million worth of uniforms and supplies in their inventory in 1996–twice as much as what they use annually.
The audit, which took place over a two-year period ending last June, reported that, of the excess inventory, uniforms accounted for about $1.6 million.
The department must order large quantities of clothes for its 2,000 uniformed employees because new officers are hired, the garments are seasonal and employees’ sizes change, said Mark McDonald, spokesman for the department.
As a result of the audit, the state police have begun to devise a plan to decrease their inventory, McDonald said.
