The mother of a teenager killed three years ago in an accident involving a drunken driver announced the formation of a memorial fund to help other survivors, as well as to increase public awareness.
Terry Reger of Homer Township said she is forming the Amy Reger Memorial Foundation in honor of her daughter, who was 17 years old when she was killed in an accident caused by a drunken driver. The accident occurred at 123rd Street and Bell Road in unincorporated Lemont on Oct. 18, 1993.
“The goal of this foundation is first to educate the community on the devastating effects of drinking and driving,” said Reger, vice principal of St. Michael School in Orland Park. “I want to prevent somebody else from going through this.”
Orland Park Trustee Richard Della Croce accompanied Reger at a news conference Thursday night at the Orland Park Civic Center to announce the creation of the foundation, which one day might erect a memorial to the victims of drunken drivers, he said.
Amy Reger was a senior at Providence Catholic High School in New Lenox and had planned to study nursing at Marian College in Wisconsin, her mother said.
