The McHenry County Zoning Board on Thursday postponed until April 22 a decision on a permit sought to erect four radio towers for all-Polish radio station WNVR near Illinois Highway 176.
According to Robert Kenny, an attorney representing Polenet Inc. and WNVR, the four towers are to be built on 20 acres just south of the Commonwealth Edison Co. right-of-way. The site is near Lakewood.
The towers are to be 195 feet 6 inches high, Kenny said, substantially lower than other radio towers in the area, including a 500-foot tower at McHenry County College.
However, 50 or more local residents who crowded the meeting room were vocal in their opposition to the towers. Some challenged Polenet’s ability to build on the swampy tract.
Ed Klimczak, whose property borders the site of the proposed towers, said, “I know how much water (the site) gets.”
The four-tower configuration will expand the station’s coverage, carrying it as far as Milwaukee, said Kent Gustafson, vice president and general manager of WNVR.
