The school board of Elgin-based School District 46 heard a proposal Monday night to eliminate fees paid by students who participate in sports in middle school and to reduce such fees in high schools in the 1997-98 school year.
Lalo Ponce, area superintendent, said the fee for participation in middle-school sports is $55 per student per sport.
The proposal presented by Ponce calls for reducing sports participation fees at high schools to $25 from $65 per student per sport.
Ponce said the reduction would keep the district’s sports participation fees in line with such fees in other local school districts. The board is expected to vote on the fee-reduction proposal at its April 21 meeting.
For example, for middle-school sports, Dundee School District 300 charges only $12 per student per sport, according to a report Ponce gave the board.
For high school sports, St. Charles High School District 303 charges students $20.
