A federal judge in Springfield on Monday refused to dismiss charges against the former co-owner of a politically connected firm accused of bilking the state out of millions of dollars.

U.S. District Judge Richard Mills denied the motion filed by Michael Martin, who alleged the government use of taped telephone conversations made by an informant revealed critical elements of his defense strategy.

Mills ruled Martin’s case was not harmed since federal prosecutors do not intend to use the tapes.

A former co-owner of Management Services of Illinois Inc., Martin, the firm and three others are accused of taking part in a scheme that allegedly defrauded the Department of Public Aid.
