Question: What’s the coolest spot on the Internet?

— Crystal, Waseca, Minn.

Dear Crystal: It’s hard to choose just one! Last week we were interested in space stuff, so we checked out the NASA site at http://www.nasa.gov/. It’s always awesome. We crave Smoothies, so we often stop by http://www.quiknet.com/mpenwell/smoothie.html for the latest recipes we can whip up in the blender. But when we can’t think of where to go, we usually end up at Yahooligans, http://www.yahooligans.com/, just to see what’s new.

Question: When I’m at some sites on the Web, I see “Java required.” What is Java, and why is it required for some things?

— Katharine, Palo Alto, Calif.

Dear Katharine: Java applets are small programs that you can download and run in your Web browser. So with Java, a programmer can create an interactive game or demonstration applet that can be downloaded and run on your computer. The great part is that you can interact with the applet right on the screen. If you want to try a word search game that uses Java, go to http://www.worktechs. com/wordsrch/wordsrch.html. If your browser doesn’t support Java, you can go to Netscape at http://www. netscape.com/ and download a browser that does.
