In response to renewed threats of terrorist activity against Americans, U.S. military forces in Bahrain have been asked to avoid congregating in public places, a military official said Monday.

Forces stationed with the U.S. 5th Fleet there have been asked to avoid restaurants and bars, the official said in Washington.

Security has been tightened for the 20,000 U.S. military forces in the Persian Gulf ever since last June’s bombing of a housing complex in Dhahran, killing 19 airmen.

The Saudis reportedly have detained dozens of suspects in the Dhahran attack, including some with ties to Iran, but they have released no details.

Investigators have blamed the explosion on Muslim militants opposed to Western forces in the Saudi kingdom, home to Islam’s two holiest shrines, at Mecca and Medina.
