A former McMinnville, Ore., high school secretary pleaded guilty to having sex with four 17-year-old boys and was sentenced to 30 days in jail and five years’ probation.
“I wish I could understand how it happened, but the truth is, I don’t know. I only know it was wrong,” Shelly Leann Hammitt sobbed Wednesday.
Hammitt, 28, was arrested Jan. 21 after resigning from her job at Amity High School. She pleaded guilty to sexual abuse and contributing to the sexual delinquency of a minor.
She had sex with the four students in homes and in vehicles off school grounds. Three of the four boys since have turned 18.
“If anything, they thought it was a sign of manhood, of status among their peers,” defense attorney Mark Bierly said. “They were bragging to the other kids at school.”
