A 21-year-old Chicago man, shot while struggling with a robber over a gold neck chain Saturday evening, died late that night.

Eric Hippolito, of 2845 N. Elston Ave., was assaulted just after 5 p.m. in a laundermat at 2128 N. Western Ave.

According to Grand-Central Area Police Sgt. Edward Mingey, a man estimated to be 25 years old walked up to Hippolito and grabbed his neck chain. The men struggled, the assailant pulled out a handgun and shot Hippolito once in the abdomen.

Hippolito’s brother was at the scene.

Hippolito was taken to Illinois Masonic Medical Center. He was pronounced dead shortly before midnight, according to a representative of the Cook County coroner.
