The New York Mets became the final team in the majors to open at home, and they were just as bad as they were on the road. The San Francisco Giants swept a double-header 5-1 and 7-6 Sunday, dropping the Mets to 3-8. The Giants’ 7-3 start, meanwhile, is their best in eight years.
Ex-Met Jeff Kent drove in three runs in the opener, then left with sprained neck when he slid head first into third base trying to stretch a double. Mark Lewis homered twice in the second game, and Jose Vizcaino.
The crowd of 21,981 was the smallest for a Mets home opener in 17 years.
Dodgers 14, Pirates 5: Todd Hollandsworth homered and drove in four runs in a nine-run third inning in Pittsburgh.
Padres 3, Phillies 1: Ken Caminiti’s RBI double in the top of the ninth inning snapped a 1-1 tie for San Diego, which has beaten the Phillies seven straight times.
Reds 6, Marlins 4: Pokey Reese’s first major-league homer–a three-run shot off Al Leiter (2-1) in the fourth inning–com-pleted a stellar weekend in Cincinnati for the 23-year-old shortstop. His first major-league hit drove in the winning run Saturday.
Expos 8, Rockies 3: Henry Rodriguez had four hits and pitcher Carlos Perez homered as Montreal snapped host Colorado’s seven-game winning streak and ended a five-game losing streak.
Cardinals 6, Astros 2: Alan Benes allowed two hits in seven innings and host St. Louis tied a league record with four consecutive doubles (Dmitri Young, Ron Gant, Gary Gaetti and John Mabry) in the fourth inning.
