The Plan Commission on Monday approved a request by Trustee Sue Paulsen and her husband, Rick, to built a 10-foot privacy fence parallel to a fence on the east side of the Dairy Mart drive-in ice cream stand on Illinois Highway 47.

Paulsen explained that the Dairy Mart fence, built on a low concrete retaining wall, is of chain-link construction with colored accent slats that do little to screen her yard from the parking lot.

She said she and a next-door neighbor planned to jointly build a wood fence parallel to and 3 feet back from the Dairy Mart fence.

Commissioner Jack Daum questioned the need for a 10-foot fence.

“I think a fence behind a fence is going to look (bad) from the highway,” Daum said. “I also question the space between the fences.”

Paulsen said the 3-foot space would allow for maintenance and cleanup. She also noted a similar wood fence near the lot.
