Three Hinsdale merchants are asking the village to amend its sign code to allow for the placement of sidewalk signs that they say are needed by out-of-the-way businesses to draw customers.

The village has sent letters to several business owners in downtown Hinsdale asking them to remove the signs, which assistant village manager Bohdan Proczko said “have been proliferating lately.”

But Joan Nelson, owner of Cloud 9 gift shop, said her business, which is located off an alley, relies on the signs to draw in 90 percent to 95 percent of its customers. She and two other business owners sent the village a letter requesting the change.

Proczko said the village is considering several other revisions to the sign code and that the business owners’ request will also be considered.
