Beginning May 3 and continuing possibly for the next three summers, downtown Wheaton will present a European-style open-air market on Saturdays in a commuter parking lot at the northeast corner of Main Street and Liberty Drive.

The council this week amended an agreement with Paris-based Bensidoun USA, which has signed up more than 40 diverse vendors who will sell food and wares, that will allow the firm to renew its contract over the next two summers if it wishes.

A joint effort between the city, the Downtown Business Association and Bensidoun, which operates 60 outdoor and indoor markets in France, the market will replace the Wheaton Chamber of Commerce’s farmers markets, which had been weekly events on North Main Street and in south Wheaton for many years.
