Ald. Ed Smith (28th) on Wednesday announced a crackdown on a crime-plagued corner in his West Side ward, where he said drug trafficking has turned residents into prisoners in their own homes.

Smith said that police officials have agreed to post an officer in the vicinity of Monroe Street and Springfield Avenue 24 hours a day. The alderman acknowledged that the police presence simply will force dealers to other locations. But, he said, “We have to be as vigilant as they are. “When they move, we move.”
