Cyndi Lauper

Sisters of Avalon (Epic) (star) (star)

A cartoonish Brooklyn girl persona and a surprisingly agile singing voice made Lauper a hot item in the mid-’80s, but she’s been totally adrift as an artist in the ’90s. “Sisters of Avalon” isn’t likely to reverse her commercial decline. Just who is Cyndi Lauper these days? The tough-talking, Mary J. Blige-style rapper of “Say A Prayer?” The angst-filled Alanis Morissette clone of “Ballad of Cleo & Joe?” Or is she the slinky, faux Toni Braxton diva of “Fall Into Your Dreams?” Until she decides Lauper will remain little more than fodder for one of those “Whatever Happened To . . . ?” stories.
