Evelyn Brown, 77, former owner of the Sa Mar Sewing Center on Chicago’s South Side, died Wednesday at her South Side home. From 1967 to 1987, she owned and operated the school, expanding it to three locations in the Chatham and South Shore communities. “She loved designing and passing on knowledge,” said her daughter, Catherine Smith. “She was intrigued most by the idea that she could pass on a creative skill to someone.” In addition to her daughter, survivors include three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Visitation will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in the Halsted Memorial Chapel, 2035 E. 79th St., followed by services there at 10:30 a.m.
