Thanks to leaders Joe Strejc and Pat Kerrigan, streaky Hinsdale South made a 180-degree turnaround Saturday and now is streaking the right way again.
The Hornets (13-8, 4-5) started out 11-1 but lost seven games in a row before Strejc’s fielding and the pitching and slugging of Kerrigan sparked 9-5 and 11-1 victories over Glenbard West (6-12) Saturday in Darien.
Strejc, a senior shortstop, twice squelched possible big innings with diving stops, one for a double play, in the first game. In the second game, junior left-hander Kerrigan slugged two home runs and earned the victory by striking out seven and yielding just one hit in four innings.
“The losing streak got so bad,” Kerrigan said, “that we practiced dropping our bats and running to the bench after striking out. We’d fall behind and then battle back but lose. Finally, coach (Paul Hoel) told us, `Start the game pretending that you’re losing.’ “
The advice worked. Hinsdale South quickly jumped to leads in both games and never trailed. Strejc’s three-run double broke a 1-1 tie in the second inning of the opener. His fielding plays nipped budding rallies in the fifth and sixth.
“Those plays were just reaction,” said Strejc. “The only way I could have made them was by diving. My range is getting better. I had an ankle sprain and it limited my range early in the season. It was frustrating.”
The only hit Kerrigan allowed was Josh Sanew’s bunt single. Kerrigan hit homers in the third and fourth innings and drove in four runs in the second game.
“I’d been in a slump like the team, but I’m coming out of it,” said Kerrigan. “I’m glad we’re going the right way again. We’re back in the driver’s seat, because everybody’s hitting again.”
Hinsdale South had 29 hits in the 12 innings.
Glenbard West won the long-ball contest in the opener. Mike Timm homered twice and Mitch Morinec homered on the next pitch after Timm’s second homer.
