Teardrop cars: Daimler-Benz AG expects to sell a modified version of its new teardrop-shaped compact Mercedes-Benz A-class car in the U.S. by 2000. Mercedes already sells its full range of C-class, E-class and S-class luxury sedans and sports cars in the U.S. and is opening a site for its M-class sports utility vehicle in Alabama. Last year unit sales in the U.S., Mercedes’ largest market outside Germany, rose 17 percent to 90,000 cars, representing 14 percent of the carmaker’s total sales. The company expects to sell 100,000 in 1997.
