Joe Mack, assistant general manager of the Carolina Panthers, has surfaced as a possible candidate to replace Rod Graves in the Bears’ personnel department.
“I have not been officially contacted,” Mack said on Tuesday. Mack, whose contract with the Panthers expires at the end of this month, is interested in the Bears, but has not heard from team President Michael McCaskey.
Mack, 43, has assisted Carolina General Manager Bill Polian primarily in the area of pro scouting, keeping tabs on other NFL players in preparation for free agency. It is in this area that coach Dave Wannstedt believes the Bears need more help. Graves, who resigned Monday, concentrated on college players and the draft.
Mack was the Redskins’ director of pro scouting from 1989-93. He also has scouted for the Falcons, Winnipeg of the CFL and the BLESTO scouting combine.
