An Elgin man is free on bond after being charged with fondling a 14-year-old Michigan boy during a class in alternative spiritual healing, Illinois State Police said Tuesday.

Jeffrey L. Knapp, 47, was charged Friday with second-degree criminal sexual conduct, a felony, in Jackson County, Mich., police said. If convicted, he could face up to 15 years in prison, police said.

Knapp was arrested July 31 at his home at 11 N 301 Romeo Drive in Elgin and extradited to Jackson County, police said.

Knapp allegedly presented himself as an instructor in “reiki,” a spiritual healing practice, and had traveled to Jackson County to conduct a June 14 class in the healing and relaxation techniques. The 14-year-old was a member of the class, police said.

Police said Knapp persuaded the boy to disrobe and allow Knapp to fondle his genitals while the two were alone.

Reiki is a legitimate healing practice and does not include disrobing or touching, according to police.

Knapp, a registered nurse, operates the Inner Journey Institute for the Healing Arts from his home, according to police.
