Ruth Holland Egan, 97, a former teacher at Jefferson Elementary School in Berwyn, died in her Freeport home on July 30. Mrs. Egan died of congestive heart failure, said her son, John. She was born on her family farm in Apple River, Ill. In the early 1920s Mrs. Egan attended Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, where she earned a teaching degree. She moved to Chicago afterward and taught at several schools. Mrs. Egan worked for 10 years as a 1st grade teacher at Jefferson School in Berwyn. She retired in 1965, but continued teaching as a substitute in Berwyn, Oak Park and River Forest for the next 10 years. Mrs. Egan lived on the city’s West Side before moving to River Forest in 1959. She later moved to live with her two sisters in Freeport in 1981. Besides her son, John Egan, survivors include a brother, a sister and three grandchildren. Services were Saturday in Freeport.
