As the trustee in charge of waste collection for the village, Mark Waiter has begun polling residents to see if they are interested in a new waste collection procedure.

At a recent board meeting, Waiter said the proposed program would require all residents to use toter cans (garbage cans on wheels) provided by the waste hauler, Groen Waste Disposal, at a cost of 75 cents per month per home, plus an additional rate for the size of the can.

The amount of garbage produced would reflect the price paid for the disposal. A small can will cost $4; medium, $7; and large, $10. Currently the waste hauler gets $5.05 per household; disposal is $7, and the administration fee is $.45. The cost per household is $12.50.

The proposed semi-volume based system of garbage collection would give residents a choice of three different sizes. The cost per household per month would come to $11.30 for small, 32-gallon size; $14.30 for medium, 56-gallon size; and $17.30 for large, 96-gallon size.

“If your volume is small, you should pay a lower cost,” Waiter said.
