The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development announced Tuesday it will give non-profit groups in Illinois more than $25 million to create housing for senior citizens and low-income disabled adults. More than half of the money is earmarked for Chicago projects.

Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Chicago will get about $13 million to create and operate 156 housing units for the elderly. The group received another $650,000 to create and run six homes for visually or hearing impaired adults.

The money will help create a total of 236 apartment units for the elderly and 43 rental units for people with disabilities. Nationwide, HUD is awarding $595.6 million.

HUD aid helps provide housing for people 62 years and older, and adults with disabilities who have incomes below 50 percent of the area median. Residents pay 30 percent of their income in rent; HUD subsidies pay the remainder.
