I agree with Joan Beck that phonics has definite value. Its lessons serve as a sturdy base on which an understanding of the English language can be built. Without this base, true comprehension is difficult to achieve.

Contrary to Ms. Beck, though, I do not believe phonics is the be-all and end-all. The main drawback to phonics is the lack of enthusiasm most children show toward it. In the words of a 7-year-old: “It is boring!” True wisdom comes from the journey and the destination. If a child does not enjoy the path toward literacy, he/she will be deprived as well.

Whole language provides room for more creative alternatives that will make this path more gratifying. I realize people who wholly support phonics will say everything relies on the individual teacher; phonics can be made fun just as whole language can be made tedious. Still, I cannot help but think that children crave variety, not just phonics.
