Homework used to mean sitting at the kitchen table with a notebook, pencil and eraser. Crawfordsville Community Schools Corp. might make that a thing of the past. The school district wants to provide students in Grades 6 to 12 with take-home laptop computers.
“It’s finally putting computers to the use they were intended for,” said Supt. Craig Glenn, adding that the idea was picked up from an education conference in April. Educators from schools around the country spoke of the benefits of providing such computers for students.
“They said that they had seen their classrooms transformed,” he said. “That the students weren’t just learning about laptops but also learning about various subjects.”
Crawfordsville currently has eight computer labs at its schools. Glenn says by leasing the laptops, schools could get newer machines every few years, without spending money on upgrading.
Through the laptops, students could write essays for an English class at home and also access the Internet or track their progress on database spread sheets.
