The Great Gretzky returns to the ice for the sequel to last year’s ice hockey hit with Wayne Gretzky’s 3D Hockey ’98. Much improved from last year, this Nintendo game deserves to bear the name of The Great One.
Gamers can tear up the ice in challenging three-on-three, four-on-four or five-on-five game play. Plus, they can choose between arcade and simulation play. Most of the cool stuff happens in the arcade mode. If you hit a power shot, the puck will catch on fire and burn up the net. And, for those of you who are into fighting on the ice, this game not only offers a great right hook, but it also has a Mortal Kombat-style finishing move.
The game controls are tight, and passes are easy to control. The graphics for this fast-paced game are suprisingly good.
The game also has an impressive artificial intelligence that allows the game to anticipate and react to your moves. Gretzky helped create the strategy and logic.
This game has everything to keep hockey fans happy. If you’re interested in arcade-style sports games, this one is a keeper (it’s $60).
