Low-cost tutoring and homework help featuring local teachers is available under two new programs offered by Hanover Township officials.

Two Elgin District U-46 teachers divide duties from 6 to 8 p.m. each Thursday night that school is in session, tutoring children in Grades 3 through 8 at the township office, said Kathleen Fox, director of Hanover Township’s Youth and Family Services.

Joanne Augelli of Parkwood Elementary School and Elizabeth Milz of Heritage Elementary School in Streamwood have been hired by the township to provide individual or small-group attention to pupils, who pay a onetime $10 fee for the school year, Fox said.

Although tutoring began less than a month ago, there already is a waiting list, so Fox hopes to extend the service.

Pupils must obtain a referral from their teacher and must be a resident of Hanover Township, which includes the Cook County portions of Streamwood, Hanover Park, Bartlett, Elgin, Hoffman Estates and Schaumburg, Fox said.

The Homework Help Club is a second after-school effort at Canton Middle School in Streamwood, where two teachers, Patricia Doyle and Eleanor Mason, help 7th and 8th graders for 1 1/2 hours each Wednesday.

The program is free, but kids are encouraged to donate a canned good for the township’s food pantry.
