The Arlington Heights Village Board on Monday night rejected petitions by residents seeking a referendum on a controversial downtown high-rise.

More than 6,200 Arlington Heights residents signed petitions calling for two referendum questions to be placed on the March ballot: to keep Davis Street and an adjacent public parking lot open, and to limit heights of buildings in the village to 90 feet.

Trustees last August rejected a similar petition drive targeting the Arlington Town Square project, which already has received village board approval.

Village Atty. Jack Siegel noted that the latest petitions contained the same signatures as before, but worded the referendum questions differently. Hence, the petitions were invalid, Siegel said.

“The board acted properly (last August),” Siegel said. “There were no new petitions submitted, as I understand it.”
