A North Side man was killed Thursday morning when he apparently slipped and fell under the tires of a Chicago Transit Authority bus, police said.
Norman Skolnick, 54, whose address was unavailable, was taken to Swedish Covenant Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 10:15 a.m., according to officials from the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
Jeff Stern, a spokesman for the CTA, said preliminary reports indicated the man had gotten off a bus at the North Park Garage, 3112 W. Foster Ave., at about 10 a.m. As he walked toward Foster Avenue, he apparently slipped and fell under another bus that also had returned to the garage, Stern said.
Chicago Police Sgt. Robert Vanna said the bus driver reported feeling a bump, stopped the bus and found the injured man on the ground. No no citations were issued, Vanna said.
Earlier Thursday, an 8-year-old South Side boy narrowly avoided serious injury at about 9:30 a.m. when he stepped off the curb at Lake Park Avenue and 55th Street, authorities said.
The boy, identified as Julian McCray, tried to get back on the curb but slipped and fell in the path of a westbound 55th Street bus, according to Stern. The bus was able to stop without injuring the boy, Stern said.
McCray was taken to the University of Chicago’s Children’s Hospital, where he was treated for minor injuries, including a loosened tooth.
