The Congress Party looked Monday to Italian-born Sonia Gandhi for leadership after its president, Sitaram Kesri, announced his resignation.

Kesri, 78, said at a news conference, “I have always said in the past that this post is dignified by Sonia.”

It was not immediately clear whether Gandhi, 51, the widow of murdered former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, would respond to the overture after the party’s lackluster general election showing.

Party stalwart Sharad Pawar made clear she would be under pressure to do so.

“Sonia Gandhi should come and take over the leadership, which is the request of everyone,” Pawar said.

Kesri said that the Congress Working Committee would meet Tuesday to discuss the issue.
