Chippewa School in Des Plaines will get an extra administrator to help handle a doubling of the student body next year.

Chippewa, now a junior high, will reopen in the fall as a middle school as part of Des Plaines District 62’s controversial restructuring plan to free up space in congested elementary schools.

The changeover will push Chippewa’s student enrollment to about 650 from about 300. To ease the extra load, district officials plan to hire an assistant principal for the school before the end of the current school year.

A 13-classroom addition and interior renovations at the school should be completed this summer.

Supt. Robert Willis said the annual salary for the assistant principal could be as high as $50,000, depending upon experience.
