March sales rise: The nation’s retailers reported that sales rose modestly in March from a year ago, with warmer-than-normal temperatures through much of the country encouraging shoppers to buy spring merchandise. While overall sales were higher, many merchants said that the Easter holiday, which falls in April this year, restrained March sales. Unusually warm weather, especially toward the end of the month when spring-like conditions blanketed much of the country, encouraged shoppers to buy warm-weather clothes and home and garden products.
