Lake Park will be the place to be when the boys gymnastics sectionals are held next month.
Three of the area’s top teams–Addison Trail, Conant and the host Lancers–will compete in that sectional May 6 under the schedule announced last week by the IHSA.
“I think Addison Trail is the top team, and Lake Park is behind them and I hope we’ll be right there,” Conant coach Ed Raymond said of the sectional.
Sectionals were awarded to four of the top-five scoring teams in the state. After Naperville North did not apply to play host to a sectional, Hinsdale South was chosen as host for the May 7 meet.
Glenbard West will play host to a sectional May 8, and two are scheduled for May 9–the Mundelein sectional will start at 2 p.m. and the one at Libertyville at 7 p.m. All others will begin at 7 p.m.
Sectional champions secure spots for the state meet May 15 at Schaumburg, while others hope to secure one of three at-large berths. Individual competition for the all-around and six events at the state meet will be May 16.
At Hinsdale South, the host Hornets will face competition from Naperville North. Glenbard West, Libertyville and Mundelein are favored to win their sectionals. York, which will compete at Glenbard West, has a strong chance of securing a state meet berth, while Hinsdale Central, Hoffman Estates and Schaumburg are on the bubble.
In previous seasons, teams could get into the state meet with a sectional score as low as 146 points. But this year the cutoff point should be in the low 150s.
“There are too many teams that can go 153,” Naperville North coach Brad Foerch said.
