A Safe Place/Lake County Crisis Center will have a reception Thursday in Lake County for area police officers in appreciation of their efforts to protect victims of domestic violence.

Staff members will also offer tours to officers who have not seen the shelter.

“We are most anxious to let our law enforcement officers know how vital their concern for victims of domestic abuse is and how much we value their support,” said Phyllis DeMott, the center’s executive director.

“We feel this is also a good opportunity for officers to get acquainted with our physical facility so that they are more comfortable recommending us to women who need to seek shelter and other services,” she said.

A Safe Place is a private, non-profit social service agency, based in Waukegan, for victims of domestic violence. It is the only shelter and counseling program for such victims in Lake County.

In 1997, the center served 2,079 women and their 346 children.
