School District 187 Supt. Patricia Pickles announced Monday night that adult education programs will return to North Chicago Community High School after a 10-year absence.

Under a deal with the College of Lake County, District 187 will provide space at the high school for adult education courses and CLC will provide the programming and teachers, some of whom are expected to be drawn from District 187 schools, Pickles said.

Classes will be targeted at residents of North Chicago and Great Lakes Naval Training Center, which is within the district’s boundaries. Offerings will include GED classes for adults who didn’t finish high school and vocational skills for working adults.

“We think that’s an exciting opportunity and one that hasn’t been available in North Chicago for the last decade,” Pickles said at Monday’s school board meeting.

High school students will also be able to accelerate their graduation and take college-level courses through the program, Pickles said. The first courses will be offered in the fall.
