Most teams that have to wait until the 10th game of the season to get their first victory wouldn’t be celebrating.
But Thornwood is an exception.
The Thunderbirds’ girls soccer team is flying high after edging Rich Central 2-1 Thursday, recording not just its first victory of the year but the first in school history .
The Thunderbirds, in their first varsity season after two years with club status, have only 14 girls on the roster, making substitutions difficult and depth non-existent.
“The kids never get down on themselves at all,” said coach Bill Ross. “They have fun every time we go out there. After we lost to Homewood-Flossmoor 15-0, they asked, `When do we play next?’ “
Seniors Dietra Tate and Erin Radulovich scored for the Thunderbirds. Junior Elicia Pearson assisted on both goals.
Glenbard West 4, Wheaton Acadmey 0: Sarah Rowland had a goal and two assists and Allison Glibkowski notched her seventh shutout of the season for No. 3 Glenbard West (11-1).
Naperville North 3, Wheaton-Warrenville South 0: Jodi Eberhard scored twice and Aileen Guiney added a goal for the No. 4 Huskies (8-1, 2-1) in the DuPage Valley.
Maine South 9, Maine West 0: Emily Knoblauch had two goals and three assists to lead No. 5 Maine South (14-0, 6-0) in the Central Suburban North. Alice Gleason posted her ninth shutout.
Lincoln-Way 3, Hinsdale South 1: Denise Peck had a hat trick and Melissa Hardy made eight saves for the seventh-ranked Knights (11-2-1).
Homewood-Flossmoor 7, Eisenhower 1: Debbie Liang’s hat trick sparked No. 8 H-F (9-0, 8-0) in the SICA East.
Lake Zurich 4, Fremd 1: Amy O’Leary had two goals and an assist for No. 9 Lake Zurich (9-2-2).
Farragut 1, Kennedy 0: Rugh Talanontes scored and Natalia Carrasco made five saves for her sixth shutout of the year for Farragut (8-1, 8-1) in the Public Red West.
Fenwick 3, St. Viator 2: Jill Heikkila scored her 26th goal of the season to lead Fenwick (10-2, 3-2) in the East Suburban Catholic.
Loyola 14, Good Counsel 0: Meghan Kay scored four goals and Kara Milewski added three more goals for Loyola (11-1, 4-0) in the Girls Catholic Athletic Conference North Division.
Softball
Morris 6, Yorkville 0: Stefanie Steele struck out 11 and allowed just two hits for No. 1 Morris (16-1, 11-0) in the Suburban Prairie White.
Joliet 8, Lincoln-Way 7: Kristin Capista had a triple, a double and two RBIs as No. 3 Joliet (19-1, 2-0) came back from a 7-5 deficit in the fifth to prevail in the SICA West.
Fremd 2, Elk Grove 0: Courtney Walker, who threw a no-hitter Wednesday, almost duplicated the feat Thursday when she allowed just one hit and struck out 12 for No. 5 Fremd (17-2, 7-1) in the Mid-Suburban crossover.
Glenbard North 8, Waubonsie Valley 5: Kathy Rup had two hits and two RBIs to lead No. 6 Glenbard North (13-2).
Richards 5, Bolingbrook 0: Carole Gorecki allowed two hits and struck out seven and Cyndi Couperous had two hits, two RBIs and two stolen bases for No. 9 Richards (12-7, 2-0) in the SICA North.
Benet 2, Marian Catholic 1: Meghan Ward (9-1) scattered six hits and struck out five as Benet (17-3, 1-1) squeezed out the East Suburban Catholic Conference victory.
Immaculate Heart of Mary 10, Timothy Christian 5: Amy Fox had a triple and three RBIs and Julie Keim pitched four innings of no-hit ball with nine strikeouts for IHM (17-4).
Glenbard South 10, Fenton 0: Lauren Cuthbertson threw her second straight no-hitter and struck out 11 and Corey Roman and Jess Stephens each drove in two runs to spark the Raiders (11-5, 5-1) in the Suburban Prairie White.
Mather 11, Amundsen 1: Jenny Hutzenlaub allowed one hit and struck out 12 and Doris Luna and Rania Jarta each drove in three runs for Mather (12-2, 3-0) in the Public League Far North.
Nazareth Academy 18, Walther Lutheran 0: Vanessa Sanders hit a grand slam and drove in five runs and Erin Doonan went 4 for 5 and scored four runs as Nazareth (11-6, 8-2) cruised in the Private School League.
Providence 9, St. Francis de Sales 2: Michelle Schaper allowed just three hits and struck out 10 for Providence (7-4).
Reed-Custer 5, Sandwich 0: Amanda Hall gave up three hits and struck out five while posting the shutout for Reed-Custer (12-7, 4-1) in the Interstate Eight.
St. Ignatius 7, Regina Dominican 0: Bridgett O’Loughlin (9-3) allowed four hits and struck out five to post the five-inning victory for St. Ignatius (17-6, 5-0) in the GCAC White.
Waukegan 15, Maine East 0: Stephanie Bouffard struck out 10 and allowed just two hits and Cody Brook went 3 for 3 with a homer and five RBIs to power Waukegan (13-6, 4-1) in the Central Suburban South.
Zion-Benton 8, Libertyville 7: Cyranda Werda went 3 for 4 with a triple and two RBIs for Zion (6-4, 2-2) in the North Suburban.

Prospect d. Hoffman Estates 15-4, 15-7: Kevin Kowal’s 10 kills and two aces and Kevin Hallen’s 20 assists lifted No. 3 Prospect (20-0, 7-0) in the Mid-Suburban South.
Andrew d. Homewood-Flossmoor 15-7, 15-5: Tom Nelson’s five kills and eight blocks and Mazin Qureshi’s 16 assists lifted No. 7 Andrew (15-2, 6-1) in the SICA West.
Niles North d. Glenbrook North 15-4, 15-11: Jonnie David’s 10 kills, Alex Samoylovich’s eight kills and Nevin Barin’s 36 assists helped the Vikings (16-3, 4-0) upset No. 8 Glenbrook North in the Central Suburban North.
Loyola d. Brother Rice 15-8, 7-15, 15-10: Jamie O’Malley had seven kills and three blocks and Steve Pope six blocks and two kills for Loyola (17-7, 8-1) in the Catholic League.
Amundsen d. Taft 15-10, 15-10: Sergio Menendez had 10 kills and William Xiong added 13 assists to key Amundsen (7-3, 5-3) in the Public North.
