Village officials deadlocked Monday night on a proposal to approve revisions to a cable television contract that would have given subscribers two more entertainment channels at the cost of a local access channel.

The agreement called for Jones Intercable to air Sci-Fi on Channel 72 and TVLand on Channel 57. Both channels were to begin broadcasting in early July had the deal been approved.

But the stumbling block came when trustees disagreed over the value of the local access channel. Jones had offered to pay the village $30,000 for permission to delete one access channel that currently is required by local franchise ordinances.

But Trustee Joe LaPato said he believed the channel was worth about $50,000, and the trustees then reached a stalemate on approval of the overall agreement.

Instead, the village intends to review the contract with Jones to try to determine the actual worth of the access channel.

The village’s cable television staff also recommended that, if the deal is approved, $13,500 of the payment be spent on acquiring new video equipment for the village.
