Victims of domestic abuse would receive vital assistance beginning in October when a city-sponsored hot line is expected to begin operation.
Under a measure approved Monday by the City Council’s Budget Committee, the Daley administration would be authorized to negotiate a contract with the Chicago Metropolitan Battered Women’s Network to operate the hot line 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Counselors would direct victims to shelters, legal services, support groups and other assistance.
The program is expected to cost about $800,000 in its first year. Assuming approval of the measure by the full City Council, funding will come from the city, private sources and a $350,000 federal grant, Landis said.
