Reggie Miller: Shooting only .333 from the field, you’re basketball’s version of the Indianapolis 333.
DEJA VU
Are we mistaken, but don’t all these Bulls playoff games seem the same? The script goes something like this: Bulls fall behind early, looking like they couldn’t beat the Denver Nuggets; trail by five to seven points at halftime; take the lead with a smothering third-quarter run; hang on in the fourth quarter and coast to victory.
About the only suspense of late: What time is Dennis Rodman going to show up?
THE STRETCH
Thanks to NBC’s programming, basketball fans got to enjoy the best part of the season at a snail’s pace this week. The Jazz-Lakers series had three days between Games 2 and 3, while the Bulls and Pacers will have played only one game in five days.
If NBC stretches out the playoffs any longer, Jeffrey Jordan should be ready to replace his father in the Bulls’ backcourt.
CHEAP FISH
It is surprising Florida kept Mike Piazza as long as it did. For the one week he was with them, the Marlins had to pay the catcher $309,392, which probably made him the highest-paid player on the team.
Here’s betting that as part of the deal, Florida insisted that the Mets pick up all the travel expenses for the players. Who can blame the Marlins? The cost of Piazza’s cross-country trip from Los Angeles to Miami nearly broke the bank of owner Wayne Huizenga.
CHIN UP
Don’t despair, Cubs fans. Who needs Mike Piazza when you have Scott Servais?
PINHEAD PATROL
Tony George should have his own special pinhead hat made for him. What the Indy racetrack owner has done to one of this country’s great sporting events is a travesty.
George has made the Indianapolis 500 about as insignificant as, say, the World Series.
STANLEY WHO?
Speaking of insignificant, are the Stanley Cup playoffs still going on? No Gretzky, no Lindros, no Lemieux, no Montreal means no ratings.
But on the plus side, the Blackhawks’ golf games are coming around nicely.
NEWS FLASH
This just in: The Marlins announced they are going to field a team with only seven players as they push toward their goal of having a payroll that’s zero.
