A grease fire in an apartment kitchen Friday caused extensive damage to a west side Aurora apartment building, fire department officials said.
No one was injured in the blaze at 981 Old Indian Trail Drive, but the building sustained extensive damage and was no longer inhabitable, said Fire Marshal Marty Kunkel. The building’s fire alarm went off at 9:02 a.m. and the blaze was extinguished about 2 1/2 hours later, Kunkel said.
He said the Red Cross was on the scene late Friday helping 60 to 70 people find shelter.
Kunkel said the occupant of the apartment where the fire started said he heated a gas burner on the stove to loosen grease so he could remove it. After heating the grease to a liquid, he mistakenly thought he had turned off the stove before going outside to dump the garbage, Kunkel said.
