Village officials Monday night agreed to hire an architect to design a multipurpose recreation facility that would feature indoor soccer fields, basketball courts, an indoor track and meeting space.

The building is envisioned to be 80,000 to 90,000 square feet and cost from $5 million to $9 million, director of the village’s Parks and Recreation Department. “Until we talk to the architect, it’s hard to hone in on the exact size and price,” he said.

The Recreation Committee agreed to hire Yarger & Associates, of St. Louis, the architect, and Sverdrup, the construction management firm, at a total cost of up to $650,000 to begin the design work. Funding for the design would be paid from the village’s recently created $10 million capital improvement fund.

Other projects include expanding the municipal swimming pool, redeveloping the 143rd Street train station and purchasing open land for conservation.

Major said the recreation center may be built at the northwest corner of Centennial Park, 15300 West Ave., or at the Doctor School property on 159th Street west of Wolf Road. The school is expected to be demolished later this year and the land will be turned over to the village.

The committee also approved an amendment to the recreation department budget to include the $300,000 cost for a proposed skating park.
