Atheist activist Rob Sherman, in a second attempt to get domestic battery charges dropped and have his two guns returned, went before a different judge at the Rolling Meadows branch of Cook County Circuit Court Thursday but got the same answer: No.
Sherman, of Buffalo Grove, is accused of punching and slapping his 16-year-old son last week in their home.
Judge Francis Glowacki declined to dismiss the domestic battery case even though Sherman argued that all of the family members involved, including Sherman’s son, want to resolve the matter through counseling, not in court. Sherman also contended that statements his wife and son gave to Buffalo Grove police were coerced.
Sherman also asked Glowacki to lift a condition of his bond that required him to surrender two guns. Sherman has said he needs the guns to protect his family.
Sherman also alleged that police forced his wife to testify falsely that she wanted the guns out of the house.
But Cook County Assistant State’s Atty. Peter Karlovics said state law requires a person charged with domestic battery to surrender all firearms. Glowacki agreed and said the law did not allow him to vacate the order.
